Online Casinos in Canada

Canada does not have one online casino market - it has eleven. Gambling is a provincial responsibility, so Ontario runs a fully licensed competitive market, Quebec and British Columbia run government monopolies, and most other provinces sit somewhere in between. Where you live determines which casinos are legal for you, which protections apply, and even which payment methods work smoothly.

Ontario: the regulated outlier

Since April 2022, Ontario has run North America's most open regulated online casino market. Private operators with an iGaming Ontario agreement and AGCO registration can legally serve the province, and dozens do. Players in Ontario get real consumer protection: segregated funds, a local dispute process, and advertising rules that ban bonus inducements in public ads.

Ontario-licensed sites must verify you are physically in the province and 19 or older. The practical result is a market that looks like the UK or Europe - big international brands competing openly - which no other Canadian province has replicated.

The rest of Canada: monopolies and the grey market

Outside Ontario, the legal options are provincial lottery corporations: PlayNow in British Columbia and Manitoba, Espacejeux in Quebec, ALC in the Atlantic provinces. These are legal, safe, and limited - smaller game libraries, no competitive bonuses, and the house edge funds provincial programs.

Millions of Canadians outside Ontario play on offshore casinos licensed in Malta, Curaçao, or Kahnawake. Federal law does not criminalise the player, and no Canadian has been prosecuted for it. But these sites operate without provincial authorisation, so disputes are handled - if at all - under the offshore licence.

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission, based in Quebec's Mohawk Territory, has licensed online gambling sites since 1999 and is a genuinely experienced regulator, though its licences carry no provincial legal standing.

Interac is the payment that matters

Ask Canadian players what they deposit with and the answer is Interac e-Transfer. It moves money directly from a Canadian bank account, settles in minutes, and is supported by nearly every casino that seriously targets Canada. A casino without Interac is not really built for this market.

Credit cards work inconsistently - several Canadian banks decline gambling transactions as a policy choice. iDebit and Instadebit bridge bank accounts where cards fail. Cryptocurrency is accepted widely offshore but removes any chargeback option.

Withdrawals in Canadian dollars matter more than they seem. Casinos that force USD balances skim a conversion spread on every deposit and withdrawal; over a year of play that silent percentage adds up to more than most bonuses.

Tax: winnings are usually yours to keep

Canada does not tax recreational gambling winnings - the CRA views them as windfalls. The exception is gambling carried on as a business: systematic, professional play with an expectation of profit can be taxed as income. That standard catches almost no casino players, but professional poker players have been assessed. Interest earned on winnings after you receive them is taxable like any investment income.

How the ranking on this page works

The list above is a paid placement ranking. Brands bid for positions, the bids are public, and anyone can outbid the leader. A high position means a brand paid for visibility to Canadian players - it is not an editorial quality score.

Our casino reviews are written independently of the auction: bids cannot buy a better review. Check whether a brand holds an Ontario registration or only an offshore licence before depositing - the review states it plainly.

Problem gambling support by province

Every province funds free, confidential help: ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600) in Ontario, Gambling Support BC, the Alberta Health Services addiction line, and Jeu: aide et référence (1-800-461-0140) in Quebec. Ontario's regulated market also requires operators to offer self-exclusion and deposit limits; offshore sites vary widely in what they provide.

If gambling is costing you money you need, or you are hiding it from family, call your provincial line. These services are free and staffed around the clock.

Frequently asked questions

Are online casinos legal in Canada?

It depends on your province. Ontario has a fully licensed private market. Elsewhere, provincial lottery sites are the legal option, while offshore casinos operate in a grey zone - players are not prosecuted, but they play without provincial consumer protection.

Do I pay tax on casino winnings in Canada?

Recreational winnings are tax-free - the CRA treats them as windfalls. Only gambling conducted as a genuine business can be taxed, which applies to almost no casino players.

What is the best payment method for Canadian players?

Interac e-Transfer is the standard: fast, direct from your bank, and supported by nearly every casino targeting Canada. Credit cards are often declined by Canadian banks for gambling transactions.

What is the gambling age in Canada?

19 in most provinces, including Ontario and British Columbia; 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec. Online casinos verify age and identity before withdrawals.

Is the ranking on this page independent?

No - it is a paid placement auction with visible bids. Our casino reviews are written independently and cannot be influenced by bids.
